The Oklahoma Sooners are set to make a late-offseason addition to the roster. Former SMU Mustangs guard BJ Edwards has committed to OU, On3’s Joe Tipton reports. Edwards is getting another season of eligibility thanks to the recent five-for-five temporary injunction. While SMU wanted to keep Edwards, he opted to head across the Red River to play for head coach Porter Moser.
Edwards has played four seasons of college basketball at two different schools. Thee years were spent in Dallas at SMU after originally committing to Tennessee out of high school. Of course, Edwards was a part of the 2022 recruiting class, which is the lone cycle getting another chance in college athletics.

Only 14 games were played on Rocky Top, only to see his role expand in a big way once landing at SMU through the NCAA transfer portal. Across two different head coaches as well. Rob Lanier was there for the 2022-2023 season before Andy Enfield was hired by the Mustangs. Still, Edwards remained a key part of the equation.
Last year was by far the best of Edwards’ career. He played in 28 games, dealing with some injuries down the stretch. And still, the scoring average sat at 12.7 points per game while shooting 47.4% from the field. Edwards added 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.
Defense might be where Oklahoma really looks to take advantage of Edwards, though. Two years in the ACC have resulted in All-Conference defensive team honors. No stat better explains why than steals, where he averaged 2.4 steals per game in ’24-25 and 2.3 in ’25-26.

Now, Edwards is joining an OU program looking to get back on track. Moser wanted to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, only to fall short. Oklahoma finished 21-16 overall but 7-11 in SEC play. The committee deemed the resume not good enough, meaning the Sooners did not hear their name called on Selection Sunday.
Everyone in Norman hopes the roster is capable of competing in the SEC this winter. Edwards is certainly a huge boost to the cause, being an addition nobody thought we be possible just a couple of weeks ago.
