Less than four months after helping usher in a new era of Florida State basketball under head coach Luke Loucks, former Seminoles teammates LaJae Jones and Robert McCray V found themselves on opposite benches during NBA Summer League action. The matchup marked another milestone for a Florida State program that has continued to produce professional opportunities under its new coaching staff.
Jones, who was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 54th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, suited up for Golden State's Summer League squad after becoming the first NBA draft selection of the Luke Loucks era at Florida State. McCray, meanwhile, earned an Exhibit 10 contract with the Los Angeles Lakers after going undrafted, giving him an opportunity to compete for a roster spot and continue his professional development.
Jones had the stronger night statistically in Golden State Gold's 104-72 win. The Warriors rookie played 19 minutes and finished with three points, three defensive rebounds, two assists, and one steal. He shot 1-of-3 from the field and 1-of-2 from 3-point range while posting a plus-19 rating.
McCray had a tougher Summer League opener with the Lakers. He played a little more than 10 minutes, finishing scoreless on 0-of-6 shooting, including 0-of-3 from beyond the arc. He also grabbed two rebounds, committed one turnover and finished with a minus-10 rating.
While Summer League results rarely define a player's long-term trajectory, the sight of Jones and McCray competing against one another served as a reminder of the talent assembled in Loucks' first season in Tallahassee. The duo played key roles for the Seminoles during the 2025-26 campaign, helping Florida State return to postseason relevance while showcasing the versatility and athleticism that attracted NBA evaluators.
For Florida State fans, the Summer League matchup offered an early glimpse at two players who helped shape the foundation of the Loucks era. Regardless of where their professional journeys ultimately lead, Jones and McCray's paths crossing on an NBA court just months after sharing one in Tallahassee represents another encouraging sign for the future of the Seminoles' program.
