A one-time member of the Seattle Seahawks is calling it a career.
Ahkello Witherspoon, who was in camp with former Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders, was placed on the reserved/retired list on Tuesday, signaling the end of the line for the 31-year-old.
The cornerback signed a one-year deal with Washington in March, after three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.
Originally a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, Witherspoon signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Seahawks at the end of his rookie deal in 2021. An explosive athlete with long, 33-inch arms, he figured to be a natural fit in then-defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr.’s secondary.
But, after he failed to win a job in training camp, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the regular season in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick. That selection was used on defensive end — and champion — Mike Morris, who played in every game during last season’s march to the Super Bowl.
Across a nine-year career, Witherspoon started 64 games and notched 13 interceptions for the 49ers, Steelers, and Rams.
