Former Red Sox First Baseman Having Resurgent Season For Braves originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox are struggling to string together wins right now, but some of their former players are having great seasons.
Dominic Smith spent time with the Red Sox in 2023, and the Atlanta Braves signed him in the offseason. After signing with the San Francisco Giants in June 2024, he played decently but missed time with a hamstring injury late in the year. The Braves took a chance on him, and he is having a resurgent season.
Smith played 84 games for the Red Sox in 2024. He posted a .237 average with .706 OPS and hit six home runs. The following season, he played in 63 games, hitting .284. His time with the Giants was not bad, but he had to prove it was more than just a flash in the pan. This season for the Braves, he has a .746 OPS, an OPS+ of 109 and is hitting .281.
He has six homers and 31 RBIs on the season as well, and has played a huge role in the Braves being one of the best teams in baseball. He has filled holes in the lineup while the Braves were dealing with injuries, spending most of his time as the designated hitter.
Smith is not a player who can just be plugged into the lineup every day. However, he has found a clear role on the Braves. He is crushing right-handed pitching this year. He has a .301/.331/.466 slash line against righties. The Braves are looking to make a deep run in October, and the 31-year-old is a key player for them this year.
