Liam Hendriks’ 2025 season started on the injured list with the Boston Red Sox, and ended with the veteran closer sporting a 6.59 ERA.
After signing a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins in February with an invitation to the team’s MLB spring training camp, Hendriks was hoping for a fresh start in 2026.

Hendriks, a three-time All-Star closer, might get that opportunity. It won’t come with the Twins, who granted the 39-year-old right-hander his release on March 20 after he triggered an opt-out clause in his contract.
Hendriks was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA (7 IP, 3 ER) in seven spring training appearances with the Twins. He’ll try to parlay that performance into a new contract with a team looking for bullpen help on the free agent market.
In 14 seasons with the Twins (2011-13), Kansas City Royals (2014), Toronto Blue Jays (2014-15), Oakland A’s (2016-20), Chicago White Sox (2021-23) and Red Sox (2024-25), Hendriks has 116 saves and a 3.88 ERA.
One of the most reliable closers in baseball at his peak, Hendriks’ career was interrupted twice in recent years. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2022 and announced he was cancer-free in April 2023.
Then, in August 2023, Hendriks was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery, effectively ending his time in Chicago.
Opening Day around MLB is next week, leaving a few days for the Australia native to latch on with a new organization.
