Lance McCutcheon never became the undrafted hero many fans thought he’d be after he led the NFL in receiving yards during the 2022 preseason, but for one summer, everyone was rooting for him.
The former Los Angeles Rams receiver announced his retirement from the NFL this week, just four years after signing with the team as an undrafted rookie out of Montana. He played one game in his career and saw five targets but never recorded a reception during the regular season.
After his one year with the Rams, he had stints with the Texans, Jets, Steelers and Titans, all on the practice squad. He made the Rams’ initial 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie in 2022 but was waived the following year during final roster cuts.
In his first big opportunity as a rookie during the 2022 preseason, he led the NFL in receiving yards with 259 – 33 more than any other player. That included a long of 60 yards and two touchdowns, coming on 15 total receptions, fifth-most that preseason.
He made some spectacular catches, using his 6-foot-2 frame to box out defenders and elevate over DBs as a favorite target of Bryce Perkins'. It's unfortunate he never panned out but he captured the hearts of fans during the summer of 2022.
