Drew Brees spent a 20-year NFL career taking his Purdue football connection to 13 Pro Bowls and one Super Bowl championship.

On Thursday, he was announced as the fifth Boilermaker elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Dan Fouts, like Brees a former San Diego Chargers great, delivered the news to Brees at his home.

Brees joined fellow quarterbacks Len Dawson and Bob Griese, cornerback Rod Woodson and coach Hank Stram as Hall of Famers. Brees' induction came on his first year on the ballot.

Roger Craig, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly and Adam Vinatieri were announced as the other inductees to the Class of 2026 at Thursday's NFL Honors program in San Francisco.

The Chargers selected Brees with the first pick of the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. His greatest years came with the New Orleans Saints. He was twice voted Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year and was MVP of Super Bowl XLIV, leading the Saints over the Colts.

Brees set NFL career records for completions (7,142), 5,000-yard passing seasons (five), consecutive games with a touchdown pass (54), most touchdown passes in one game (7) and the single-season completion percentage (74.4). He ranks second in passing touchdowns (571) and passing yards (80,358), third in completion percentage (67.7) and fourth in wins (172).

Brees was also named Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2006.

The induction ceremony will be held in August in Canton, Ohio.
