It's not do-or-die just yet for the Penn State football program, but there's a lot more pressure on this program to succeed over the next nine months than it might seem. Penn State, historically an elite program, should be one of the top teams in America next season, and there's absolutely no debate about that.
Even if we just go by Penn State's schedule next season, there's absolutely no reason it won't be one of the top 10 or 15 teams in America. Frankly, anything less should be viewed as a major disappointment, even if it is Matt Campbell's first season.
However, I still think we need to give Matt Campbell some sort of grace, even if I don't necessarily want to. I want Penn State to win right away, and I think Campbell has all the tools to do just that.
At the same time, it isn't easy to win at any program right away, so Campbell will have to figure some of that stuff out. Regardless, it seems like many believe Campbell was the man for the job, including some former Penn State greats.
That includes a former Penn State quarterback who said that Campbell was the perfect hire and the fit for what the program is trying to do.
“I actually would agree with that. I think Matt Campbell was the perfect hire, the perfect fit for where we are right now as a program, as a university going forward, as a football team.”
“He’s actually from my hometown. I’m from Canton, Ohio. He’s from Massillon, Ohio,” Todd Blackledge said, per On3. “Obviously, I’m a lot older than him, but our schools are in the same league, and so I’m familiar with him. So I’ve known him for a long time, had great respect for him, thought he did a wonderful job at Iowa State, covered him a few times when he was coaching there.”
The Iowa State aspect is the most interesting and concerning part to me here. I completely get that winning at Iowa State is a lot different than winning at Penn State, but I don't think he really had a perfect 10-year tenure with the Cyclones.
Not to say that things went poorly at Iowa State because he won a lot, but if Campbell comes over and does what he did at Iowa State at Penn State, I'll go out on a limb and say that nearly everybody would be disappointed in those results.
