Penn State football has suffered its first transfer portal loss.
Nittany Lions guard JB Nelson entered the transfer portal early Monday morning, the day the spring transfer window opened. The move was first reported by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and seemingly confirmed by a later tweet from Nelson himself.
The news comes after Nelson was removed from Penn State's official online roster on Friday, meaning he'll spend his sixth and final year elsewhere.
Ranked as a 3-star recruit, Nelson's college career began with two seasons at Lackawanna Community College, where he started all 10 games in 2021.
He then transferred to Penn State and played sparingly in 2022, appearing in four games while making no starts. In 2023, he increased his playing time and appeared in 11 games, starting in eight.
In 2024, Nelson took a step back, serving as the backup right guard behind starter Sal Wormley but appearing in all 16 games in a rotational role.
With Wormley graduating, Nelson was in contention for the starting right guard position, but he was seemingly beat out by sophomore Cooper Cousins during spring practice, leading to his departure from the program.
Nelson will likely be highly sought after in the portal, as a veteran presence with starting experience in the Big Ten who has the versatility to kick out to tackle if needed.
