The Green Bay Packersannounced the passing of former team president and CEO Bob Harlan on Thursday. Harlan, who joined the franchise in 1971 and eventually retired as president in 2008, was 89 years old.
Team historian Cliff Christl wrote Harlan's obituary on Packers.com, a legendary writer in Green Bay producing a fitting tribute to a legendary figure in the history of the Packers franchise.
According to the Packers, the team owned the league's best record from 1993 to 2007, a testament to Harlan's impact on the product on the field. Harlan also spearheaded the franchise's work on Lambeau Field, transforming the ground into the Mecca of pro football stadiums and ensuring the Packers would remain in Green Bay -- the NFL's smallest city -- for the long term.
Every Packers fan lacking the historical insight of Harlan's run as president should spend an hour on the video below and learn how instrumental the man was to reviving a dying franchise in the early 1990s. Harlan's Packers emerged from the NFL's basement and became a premier franchise, winning Super Bowl XXXI in January of 1997 after Harlan boldly hired Ron Wolf, who then boldly built a sustained winner. Everything about the "Return to Glory" was set into motion by Harlan, a man who almost certainly deserves more lasting recognition from the franchise and possibly even a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
On Packers.com, tributes for Harlan included 12 of the most influential people in recent Packers and NFL history, including Ron Wolf, Mark Murpgy, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Mike Holmgren and Mike McCarthy.
A titan of the Packers franchise is now gone. May he never be forgotten.
