Media types tend to throw around comparisons like opinions, and a lot of the time, it's a bit of a stretch. However, when a Hall-of-Famer does it, it carries a little more weight. So, maybe, when former Ohio State legendary receiver and NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter draws a pretty significant comparison, we might want to listen.

While appearing on the Fully Loaded podcast recently, Carter was asked what he thinks of OSU backup quarterback Tavien St. Clair: "What do you think of Tavien St. Clair, the backup for the Buckeyes? I think he could be Justin Fields." It was a question that came in from a caller, and the former Minnesota Viking legend didn't hesitate to go stratospheric with what he thought of the Ohio native waiting his turn behind current quarterback Julian Sayin.

“He looks like a version of Patrick Mahomes. Really good athlete, can be a dual threat, (but) is more of a pocket passer,” Carter said. “Had a great spring, good-looking prospect. I think what Ryan Day and the quarterbacks that he's developed – he's a better thrower than Justin Fields. He's not as good a runner as Justin Fields. But man, I don't want to see a guy running like Justin Fields was running, because ultimately, it hurts your growth and development as a passer, especially when anticipating down the field. But, great-looking athlete. ... I saw him this year, spent the week with the Buckeyes in spring football.

“Yes, he looks like the next starting quarterback if our guy Julian Sayin decides to leave college with two years of eligibility left,” Carter continued. “The Buckeyes are going to be in good hands with him … a future NFL quarterback.”

Could Tavien St. Clair be Ohio State's next star quarterback? Everything points in that direction. He's an outstanding athlete. Can extend plays. Has the ability to run. But wins first as a passer. That's extremely high praise considering Mahomes has widely been considered to be the best quarterback in the league for multiple years and is a future NFL Hall of Famer himself, likely from the first ballot. There's been a pretty unbelievable run at the quarterback position for Ohio State, and if Carter is right, it'll continue after Sayin and beyond when St. Clair starts taking snaps under center on the banks of the Olentangy.
