SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A Savannah native and former NFL player was posthumously inducted into the Beach Hall of Fame on April 25.

Roy Simmons graduated from Beach in 1975 and played five years of professional football, including three with the New York Giants, one in Washington and one with USFL’s Jacksonville Bulls.

Simmons played his college ball at Georgia Tech before the Giants selected him in the eighth round of the 1979 NFL Draft.

Simmons is known as one of the first NFL players to acknowledge publicly he was gay. He passed away at age 57 in 2014.
