With the trade deadline approaching, the Red Sox must decide whether to be buyers or sellers.
That likely got more difficult given they’re in the midst of a 13-game win streak and have moved into an American League Wild Card spot.
But if they want to buy, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden proposed a trade with the Rockies he’d like to see Boston make come Aug. 3.
Red Sox receive: Catcher Hunter Goodman
Rockies receive: Pitchers Connelly Early and Kyson Witherspoon, shortstop Marcelo Mayer and catcher Carlos Narváez.
“In this proposal, the Red Sox get the big middle-of-the-order bat they need in Goodman, who is controllable through 2029 and arbitration-eligible next year. Yes, his home ballpark is Coors Field, but Goodman has been a much better hitter on the road this year, so his offensive output is no high-altitude mirage,” Bowden. wrote. “He’s in the 96th percentile for barrel rate and the 88th percentile for bat speed, according to Statcast. Adding his bat solves the Red Sox’s biggest need and puts them in a legitimate position to make the playoffs.”
Goodman would fill the need for a right-handed bat the Red Sox have needed this season. The catcher has 30 home runs and 56 RBI.
Narváez has been strong behind the plate for the Red Sox in 55 games and knows when to challenge a call. He lost at-bats while Mickey Gasper was called up from Worcester. The catcher is batting .200 with three home runs and nine RBI.
Both Mayer and Early are currently on the injured list. Early is dealing with elbow inflammation, while Mayer has a bone stress reaction in his forearm.
It’s unclear when either player will return.
Prior to his IL stint, Early went 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA, a 1.255 WHIP and 93 strikeouts in 91⅔ innings. Mayer amassed a .220 batting average with three home runs, 22 RBI and a .312 slugging percentage.
“The Rockies desperately need to improve their starting rotation with long-term solutions, and Early and Witherspoon would do just that,” Bowden wrote. “Early, 24, is currently on the injured list with elbow inflammation, but he’s throwing again and on track to return this season. He has a 3.44 ERA in 17 starts for Boston this year. Witherspoon, 21, is a 2025 first-round pick currently pitching in High A. He has high upside, though his control and command have yet to arrive.”
Whether the Red Sox buy or sell at the deadline remains to be seen. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was tight-lipped about Boston’s plans, but revealed the next 10 days will be critical as more updates about the slew of injured players become clearer.
