Tommy Troy is finally getting his shot with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks called up Troy to make his MLB debut after placing Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Gurriel suffered the injury while making a sliding catch against the Rockies, and Arizona decided to be cautious with him after his previous ACL recovery. That opened the door for Troy, a former first-round pick who has been working his way through the minors since 2023.

Strong Triple-A Numbers Earned The Opportunity

The 24-year-old is rated as the Diamondbacks’ No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline and has put together a strong season at Triple-A Reno. Through 44 games, Troy is hitting .307 with a .397 on-base percentage, a .449 slugging percentage, three home runs, and 28 RBIs. That production made the timing work.

Defensive Flexibility Could Be The Key

Troy was originally drafted as an infielder, but his path to the majors has shifted. Arizona has slowly moved him into the outfield, and that versatility appears to be one of the biggest reasons he got the call. Manager Torey Lovullo said Troy’s outfield experience helped drive the decision.

That detail matters because Troy does not need to force his way into one fixed position right away. If he can handle multiple spots, run the bases well, and give Arizona competitive at-bats, he becomes much easier to keep around. For a team trying to protect depth while staying in the race, that kind of flexible prospect can become valuable quickly.

A Chance To Create A Bigger Role

Troy may not immediately step into a full-time role. Lovullo indicated he could be used as a defensive replacement, which makes sense with Gurriel not expected to miss extended time.

Still, this is a meaningful promotion. A former No. 12 overall pick does not need much of an opening to make things interesting. If Troy handles the moment, Arizona may have to find more ways to get him on the field even after Gurriel returns.

For now, the Diamondbacks needed coverage. Troy needed an opportunity. Both sides just got one.
