Former Florida State pitcher CJ Van Eyk has officially become the latest Seminole to reach the major leagues. The Toronto Blue Jays selected Van Eyk in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft with the No. 42 overall pick after a standout three-year career at Florida State. Now, after working his way through Toronto's minor league system, the right-hander has earned his opportunity with the Blue Jays, becoming the 85th former Seminole to play in Major League Baseball.
Van Eyk arrived in Tallahassee as one of the nation's top pitching prospects and quickly developed into one of the ACC's premier arms. After beginning his freshman season in a hybrid role, he settled into the Seminoles' weekend rotation and earned Freshman All-American honors in 2018 before collecting All-ACC recognition in 2019. During the shortened 2020 campaign, he posted a 1.31 ERA with 25 strikeouts in just four starts before the season was canceled.
Over three seasons in garnet and gold, Van Eyk compiled an 18-5 record with a 3.21 ERA and struck out 225 batters in 176.2 innings, establishing himself as one of the top collegiate pitchers in the country before beginning his professional career.
Van Eyk’s path to the majors was not without setbacks. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021 and missed the entire 2022 season before returning to the mound and continuing his climb through Toronto’s farm system. Reaching the big leagues after that lengthy recovery adds another layer to the former Seminole’s accomplishment and makes his debut a notable moment for both Van Eyk and the Florida State baseball program.
Van Eyk's promotion continues Florida State's long tradition of producing major league talent. His arrival gives the Seminoles 85 former players to reach the major leagues, further adding to one of college baseball's richest professional pipelines.
