Former CT field hockey player, who set the state scoring record, earns national honor

Ellie Goldstein, a Hall High School graduate who set the state scoring record for field hockey, was awarded the Michael Freedman Outstanding Jewish High School Athlete of the Year Sunday at the Jewish Sports Heritage Association’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony Sunday at Temple Israel of Lawrence (N.Y.).

Goldstein is now a sophomore at the University of Maryland. She was a 2025 All-Academic Big Ten honoree last season, appearing in 10 games for the Terrapins, which went 10-8 last year.

At Hall High School, Goldstein scored 127 goals, a state record, and had 55 career assists. She was honored as the school’s most outstanding athlete her senior year. Goldstein, who also ran middle distance for the Hall track team, has played field hockey since she was in third grade. She graduated from Hall in 2024.

Among the other honorees were University of Florida men’s basketball coach Todd Golden, who was named The Marty Riger Outstanding Jewish Coach of the Year.
