Former Clemson baseball star and Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider is facing another setback in his injury-plagued career.

The Braves placed Strider on the 15-day injured list Saturday after the right-hander exited Friday night’s start against the New York Mets early because of arm discomfort. Atlanta later announced that Strider is dealing with elbow inflammation after experiencing soreness in both his right elbow and shoulder.

Strider’s outing at Citi Field ended abruptly in the fourth inning. Following a leadoff walk to MJ Melendez, acting manager Walt Weiss and a trainer visited the mound before Strider walked off the field. He later underwent MRI imaging Friday night.

The former Clemson standout struggled before leaving the game, allowing seven earned runs on six hits over three-plus innings. He struck out three batters while issuing one walk and hitting another. Atlanta turned to top prospect JR Ritchie, who delivered five scoreless innings in relief.

After the game, Weiss expressed concern about Strider’s condition.

“It doesn’t look great as we stand here, right now,” Weiss said.

The latest development adds to a lengthy injury history for the hard-throwing right-hander. While at Clemson in 2019, Strider underwent Tommy John surgery after tearing his UCL. More recently, he had an internal brace procedure in April 2024 following another elbow issue.

Weiss acknowledged the frustration of seeing Strider deal with yet another hurdle.

“He’s been through a lot … in the past few years trying to work his way back,” Weiss told reporters. “And we’ve seen some glimpses of it. He’s done a nice job for us this year, and there was a lot of hope. We saw him in the outing he had in L.A., [he] was just lights out. He looked just like old Spencer.”

Weiss later added, “He talked about how his shoulder and elbow weren’t feeling very good. And he wasn’t even aware of the drop in velocity. [When we got out there], he said, ‘What is it?’ Yeah, at that point, there’s no point to go on.”

Strider has made eight starts this season, going 4-2 with a 5.31 ERA across 39 innings. He has recorded 46 strikeouts against 20 walks while allowing 2.1 home runs per nine innings.

The 2023 National League strikeout leader threw 186.2 innings during his All-Star campaign that season, piling up 281 strikeouts. Since then, however, injuries have limited the former Tiger, preventing him from approaching that workload over the last three years combined.
