In a surprising turn of events, 27-year-old forward Noah Philp announced his retirement from professional hockey Friday. Philp, who last played in the NHL for the Carolina Hurricanes, had signed a two-year contract over the summer with the SHL’s HV71, which is based in Jonkoping, Sweden.
Philp’s decision to retire came just a month and a half before the SHL season is set to begin.
“I really apologize to HV71 and everyone involved regarding the timing of my decision, but I have decided to retire from hockey,” Philp said in a statement released by the team. “My motivation for hockey isn’t fully there, and I’d rather be completely honest than not be fully invested in playing.
“I believe this is best for everyone. With a month and a half left until the SHL season starts, it will be an intense task for (general manager) Johan Hult to fill the center position.”
This isn’t the first time that Philp has stepped away from the sport. In June 2023, when he was a prospect in the Edmonton Oilers’ system, he announced his retirement due to personal reasons. He returned the following year, taking a contract with the Oilers, and was then claimed off waivers by the Hurricanes the season after that.
With the Hurricanes, he only played two games before suffering a concussion which took him out of the lineup. However, he spent 29 regular season games with the Chicago Wolves last season, scoring eight goals and nine assists. Additionally, he played all 29 postseason games with the Wolves.
