ESPN recently labeled former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean as the best offseason move made by the Pittsburgh Steelers entering the 2026 season.

Dean spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, joining the organization as a rookie in 2019. During his time in Tampa Bay, he developed into one of Todd Bowles’ most trusted outside corners because of his physical coverage style and willingness to tackle consistently in space.

The article pointed toward Dean’s production in coverage last season as a major reason Pittsburgh targeted him in free agency. Playing inside Bowles’ aggressive, blitz-heavy defensive scheme, Dean allowed a 63.1 passer rating when targeted while also posting one of the league’s lowest missed tackle rates among cornerbacks.

The fit in Pittsburgh also appears natural stylistically. With Joey Porter Jr. already established on the outside and the Steelers continuing to lean heavily on pressure packages on defense, Dean gives defensive coordinator Patrick Graham another experienced corner capable of handling difficult assignments in man coverage.

For Tampa Bay, Dean’s departure marked another significant change within a secondary that has continued trending younger over the last two offseasons.
