Chip Hale’s decision to make a change at hitting coach was done with the best interests of Arizona’s program in mind. It ended up playing out well for the guy he let go, too.
Former Arizona assistant Toby DeMello is expected to be hired as head coach at Pacific, according to D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers. It will be the first head coaching job for the 36-year-old DeMello, who spent five seasons with the Wildcats.
A native of Northern California, DeMello will take over a Pacific program—located in Stockton—that went 24-30-1 in 2025 under Reed Peters, who passed away in early June at the age of 60 from an illness. Peters had coached the Tigers for two seasons and prior to that coached 17 years at San Joaquin Delta College.
Pacific, which plays in the West Coast Conference, has never reached the NCAA Tournament. It last finished with a winning record in 2010.
DeMello was let go last month after Arizona struggled mightily at the plate (and behind it) during a 19-34 season. The Wildcats hit .256 and their catchers, whom DeMello oversaw, struggled with throwing out runners as well as passed balls.
The UA replaced DeMello with a pair of assistants from Saint Mary’s, bringing in Jack Meggs to handle hitting duties and Daniel Molinari to work with the catchers. Ironically, Saint Mary’s was where DeMello played college baseball and is in the same league as Pacific.
