Every year, it feels like there is a player or two who come out of nowhere to be key contributors for the Oklahoma Sooners. Last season, that was EDGE Taylor Wein.
Wein had a great season, earning All-SEC honors. He finished the year with 39 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. Coming into the season, there was a real question mark at the EDGE spot opposite of R Mason Thomas. People were wondering if someone like Marvin Jones Jr., Adepoju Adebawore, or Danny Okoye would be the one to step up. But instead, it was Wein.
The question for the 2026 season is who the next guy will be to take a big leap. On "The Oklahoma Breakdown with Ikard and Lehman," Wein was asked this question by Oklahoma legends Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman. Wein listed guys like Okoye and newcomer Kenny Ozowalu. However, there was another he said fans should keep an eye on.
"P.J.'s (Adebawore) done a tremendous job," Wein said. "He's dealt with adversity over the last couple of years. Man, it's lit a fire in him. I've never seen P.J. more fired up. P.J. will be ready to go. P.J.'s coming."
Adebawore is an intriguing name to watch. He had high expectations coming to Oklahoma as a five-star prospect, but injuries have set him back. He has just 27 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and five sacks in his career. He's flashed his ability, and while the pass-rushing ability has never quite come into form, he's still been one of the better run defenders on the team.
If he can take that leap and show why he was so highly regarded out of high school, he could be the perfect replacement for Thomas, who is off to the NFL.
