And people want to take a RB with our 1st round pick....

Sorry there are just too many QUALITY free agent RB's to even think about 1st round picks. Go out and grab anyone of Green, Thomas, Tayler, Foster, James, Lewis, Bennett, Williams, Davenport or Alexander for crying out loud, and odds are your probably not going to have to overpay right now for several of them might come pretty cheap with an incentive laden deal. Why pay a rookie big bucks for a position you just took a high draft pick on (Arrington) and with this many good players available. I just can't see it.

We'll probably know by the time the draft rolls around if we have one of those guys or not. If not, and L. White or D. Williams is staring us in the face it could be hard to pass on them depending on who else is on the board.

Anyway, the only FA RBs I think are proven qualityw ithout too many question marks are the following:

Chester Taylor UFA Ravens
DeShaun Foster UFA Panthers
Edgerrin James UFA Colts
Jamal Lewis UFA Ravens
Shaun Alexander UFA Seahawks

And MAYBE you could consider these guys:
Jonathan Wells UFA Texans
Maurice Morris UFA Seahawks
Michael Bennett UFA Vikings
Najeh Davenport UFA Packers

And, this guy is interesting:
Verron Haynes UFA Steeler

What about centers?

My targets would be (providing they are all healthy);

Backus, Nutten and Bentley for the O-Line.

I don't know anyone I would go after for NT other than re-signing Davis. Triplett?

I would definitely play a play for a quality RB. Alexander would be the ultimate prize. Re-sign Redmon.

I would also be tempted to take a run at Reggie Wayne. What a three headed monster our receiving corps would be.

I like Jonathan Wells as a red zone and short yardage back. He will be affordable and is the type of hard nosed player that Denny likes. We wouldn't overpay for him and still have plenty of money left to address the other needs.

Noticably omitted. I'll get those and edit the thread momentarily.

I like the idea of either getting Lewis or Najeh Davenport. Both would be a good fit for the offense.

I would also be tempted to take a run at Reggie Wayne. What a three headed monster our receiving corps would be.

Hell, with that trio of WRs, you could trot anyone out there at QB and they'd put up solid numbers. As is, I see Wayne winding up in either Philly, Atlanta or San Diego.

I'd like to see the Cards go after the following-- assuming Warner is going to be re-signed and keeping cap considerations in effect:

Jamie Martin
Ty Detmer

(Bring in one to challenge Davey/Navarre for the #2 or #3 spot. Having a vet backup would be useful, especially with Warner's recent injury history. Last thing I want to see is Warner out for the year and even with a rookie having John Navarre as the most experienced backup.)

Artose Pinner
Chester Taylor
Jamal Lewis
Jonathan Wells
Najeh Davenport

(Either Wells or Pinner could be a solid 2nd or 3rd stringer. I know the Lions and Texans at one point were pretty high on these guys, As for Davenport, the only thing seemingly seperating this guy from being a thousand yard back was the opportunity.. In all, as long as you keep him away from the local college dorm hampers, he could be a solid pickup at a reasonable rate. I see Lewis cashing in somewhere based on his past, and Taylor being re-signed by the Ravens, but if both become available, I'd have no objections with bringing either in.)

Christian Fauria

(I like Bergen long term, but having someone like Fauria around wouldn't hurt.)

Stephen Neal

(Neal is an underrated run blocker and has shown improvement as he's made the full transition to the line.)

Adam Archuleta

(To upgrade the safety position.)

Also, don't ask me why the hell I didn't catch Ricky Proehl listed as a RB. Believe me when I say I know better than that.

Are you trying to be Funny Snake? Becuase that was one hell of a good joke if you were.:D

Anyways, Adam wouldnt be an upgrade to the FS position. He is an above average SS who sucks in coverage. A Griffith to Adam move is a lateral move IMO.

Perhaps I should have reworded that "to get younger" at the safety position. I do think he's better than his numbers this year indicate, and he could improve the run defense. He does suck in coverage, however I have enough confidence in a healthy Rolle, Green and Macklin in the nickle to handle the WRs.

They're set with Wilson at the SS position but something needs to be done to improve the long term of the FS position. Griff, at 36, seems to be nearing the end and I can't envision him being brought back after his contract expires.

Michael Bennett UFA Vikings - Signs a 1 year deal to try and prove himself, in another Green offense were he excelled the last time.

Bentley - UFA - Saints - The big surprise, big name, and big money guy of the offseason. We outbid everyone and everyone is surprised to see him here, and they are more suprised at how big of a contract we give him. Bears OG - Terrance Metcalf is the backup plan, and not a to bad of a backup plan.

Toniu Fonoti UFA Vikings - The Vikings and our new OL coach saw something in him when they traded for him last year, what they didnt expect was just how bad of shape he was in so they and sent him to IR. Loney still see's something in him and would like another chance to get him into shape. Even in semi shape he is a good OG, road grader. At the price we would have to pay and the amount of cap we do have, not a bad gamble

Marlon McCree UFA Panthers - Played as a SS this year but he is a FS without a doubt. Even playing SS he had a good year defending the Pass. Under the radar type guy.

Chris Hovan UFA Buccaneers - No one wanted him here last year but proved people wrong with his strong run defense as the Bucs NT this year. Can pay UT as well but wasnt his duties this year in TB.

Brandon Manumaleuna UFA Rams - Is a 3rd OT when he is on the field. We just dont have a blocking TE on the roster, we have a bunch of guys who could be average but no good ones.

DB - Chad Williams UFA Ravens - A special teamer that our new special teams coach would like to have try out for the team.

RB - Chester Taylor - What you dont know about him is that he plays a lot of special teams so he isnt just brought in to take the place of the cut Shipp and his big contract but our special teams coach pushes for it as well.

Along with the re-signing of Warner, new contract for Dansby, RFA's, EFA's, a few other re-signing of UFA's of our own and a few other role and depth guys.

What if a winning team offers him less money but the prospect of playing for a winner?

Will he want to take more money with the Cards or take less to stay with the Panthers or another team with a better winning history? What is the likelihood that the Panthers will be able to resign him? He was playing tough today against the Bears. He will probably have a good choice of teams to choose from. I would love to have him

Chris Hovan UFA Buccaneers - No one wanted him here last year but proved people wrong with his strong run defense as the Bucs NT this year. Can pay UT as well but wasnt his duties this year in TB.

What is the likelihood that the Bucs resign him? What kind of cap room do they have Joe? Seems likely he will want to stay with a playoff team rather than come to the Cards even for less money. I admit I thought he was washed up too. Note: I hope my concerns about the Cards ability to sign these 3 guys are proven unfounded.

First the Bucs are over the Cap, and the Panthers only have 3 mill. If the cap goes up to 95 as projected.

Second, the Panthers have another SS whom they drafted in the first round last year and will try to get him on the field as their SS alongside Minter. McRee will not be a huge priority for them.

Third, Players first and foremost follow the money, to 95% of them that is their #1 priority no matter what they tell the media to be as PC as possible. They will give you the line to the media when they sign somewhere about how they feel they can be a super bowl contender but the real reason they sign somewhere is for the money, especially the signing bonus. 95% of the players follow the money and the other 5% such as Colvin whom we offered more money to but decided on NE is a few and far between exception.

For example, If we offer someone 10 Mill signing bonus and the returning super bowl champion offers 8 mill. with similar base salaries and years, you better beleive they will be coming here instead, without a doubt.

Good info Joe. Thanks. Would Dexter Jackson's signing with the Card's the year after they won the SB be a real example of your example? I don't remember what other offers he had do you? Cards made the highest offer i presume.

Correct. Jackson chose us over the Steelers, because we offered a bigger signing bonus.

I don't think they have a problem with it now. When Jackson didn't sign then were forced to draft Polamalu.

.

I forget which chat it was, Pasquarelli or Mortenson but they were asked where will Thomas Davis wind up playing and he said it looks like Davis is going to be a LB. They've decided he's not good enough in coverage to play Safety.

That was my hope too, Davis would be too expensive to sit behind McCree so they'd let him walk.

• We hear SS Marlon McCree has endeared himself to the Panthers, especially defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac, for his meticulous preparation and tough play on the field, and that re-signing him has become one of the Panthers' top priorities in free agency. McCree isn't very athletic, but he has proved to be a valuable role player.

• Word out of Charlotte is that rookie first-round pick Thomas Davis has become a good fit in nickel packages. He tends to line up on the tight end in pass coverage or is used as a blitzer.
