wasnt he originally projected to be back in december?? Now they are saying he should be medically cleared by OTA's...

Runningbacks have to carry the ball... this injury could be very detrimental to that process.

like everyone here I hope he comes back stronger than ever but we cant overlook the possibility that this injury may have long term implications in his game.

either way he will be back on the field soon and I am looking forward to seeing him dominate defenses. But IMO, we really should wait and see it on the field again before we even think about talking extensions.

I think the Cards left him there because there was no need to rush him back. If he wants to take a discount and not get paid like the #1 RB in the NFL you can talk extension.

You can't put yourself in the same situation as Mathieu. (yes I realize ACL/MCL injuries are different than wrist ones and take longer to recover from)

The only reason to extend David Johnson right now is to get him at a discount in the out years. The franchise number for running backs will be about $13M. David Johnson's base salary for this year is about $1.9 million.

The only extension that makes sense is a three-year extension worth $36 million with $15M guaranteed. David gets a little more in the next two years than he would if we just franchised him, plus he gets the money now, and the Cards would have him through his 30th birthday at a $7M annual salary.

Cards should sign David Johnson now. Much less dollars to pay. Sure there is some risk but there is always risk

I imagine, coming in the league so late and being the player he has been, his agent will make it clear to him that he is looking at one major contract in his career and they'll be looking for that rather than a modest extention

Good idea. Let's piss off the only decent player Keim ever drafted so he ends up leaving for greener pastures while Keim continues to sign washed up RB's. I halfway expect to see Matt Forte in a Cardinal uniform soon.

it might piss him off. but worse case scenario he plays on the franchise tag for a season or two...at roughly 14mil guaranteed... pretty sure he would be happy with that

If he can play one game and looks as solid as he normally does, that's all I need.

Guy's our only true game changing weapon. Please don't release him so we can replace him with another Thomas Jones.

For all of our futility at QB in our time in Arizona, let's not forget that a 1,000 yard rusher was as rare as a sub-100 day in August in Phoenix.

After a couple seasons of Forte, it will time for Frank Gore to sign with the Cards.

Let me think, there was another player on the Cardinals who was seen as a game changer and was given a huge contract after two ACL injuries and we all know how that ended up. I want to see Johnson play a half a season without a problem then I would be willing to give him a contract provided he played well on the first half of the season. Learn from your mistakes, don't repeat them. I'm talking to you Keim.

DJ didn't have a serious injury like that though

1. i dont think anyone advocating for signing him now would do so unless the team feels very good that he is 100%. After TM -- i sure hope Keim thinks that too.

2. I am advocating for signing him now, at the right price. Because:

Keim's actions have made it pretty clear that this next season is just about being competitive -- rather than playoff caliber, etc. I think he sees a couple offseasons of work to be done to get back in the playoff competitive range.

Get DJs hit out of the way to clear space for the next few offseasons

PS: on twitter last night, DJ was bowling with 15lb bowling balls with the previously injured wrist.

I will not argue that, his wrist injury isn't the same as an ACL, however he is a RB who has to hang onto the ball with each and every carry. Did the wrist heal well enough and properly so he doesn't experience fumblitis and will it have any effect on his ability to catch the ball because he's going to be a target int he passing game. I want to see him perform without any of these potential problems before I would sign him to an extension.

if you want a reason to not sign him to a fat deal just look at the mathieu contract. 'nuff said.

the steelers were in the same position with bell, but they kept putting his contract off. i half think they were hoping he had a down year to get him at a discount

Yeah, this is where I don't want to end up... with two years of franchise tags after putting 400+ touches on the guy. Or, I don't want DJ's agent to see Bell get a contract that treats him like a WR/RB (which is part of the issue that's happening in Pittsburgh), and want to be paid more than a normal running back.

It would also benefit us to get a contract done before Zeke gets an extension too. These are the top 3 backs in the league, and if we can break out with a lower-than-average deal, I'm all for it.

K9 said it best. Dj is a RB. DJ was an older age RB coming out of college. If you want the value of him playing out his contract, then it is best to just plan on franchising him twice at the end, and then letting him go. If you want to avoid a possible holdout, you give him the deal K9 suggested and throw away the value you had for the next two years.

How serious was that wrist injury? Did his hand fall off?

I've never seen a wrist injury for a football player take six months to heal.

Except that Mathieu didn't get signed for much less. He got signed at the top dollar coming off of an ACL. Why should David Johnson accept less when they gave Mathieu top dollar coming off an even worse injury?

That Mathieu signing can have crazy repercussions down the road.

Don't know but they shut down TJ Logan that had the same injury a month earlier for the entire year. Either the Cards were being careful bringing these guys back for no real reason or the injury is pretty serious.

Yeah, but he doesn't have the wear-and-tear of most of the guys his age. He just missed an entire season with an injury that wasn't a result of the grind, or a knee. Plenty of RBs would have successful careers into their 30s if they weren't abused so much in their first few years.

I forgot about Logan until yesterday, having him back could be huge too.

We should be using DJ as part of a trade for a top pick to secure a true franchise QB. RBs can be had anywhere and anytime. Package him to a RB needing team like the Giants and be done with it.

DJ had a broken wrist...a broken wrist that was supposed to see him return to the field in december... yet here, now... in the last days of March,...he still has not gotten medical clearance to practice.

for a guy who has to hold on to that ball while 300 lb dlinemen try to punch it out....a wrist is pretty important... dangerous when every tackler coming in is going to lay his helmet on that wrist as he tries to knock that ball out during a tackle

I wouldnt really sweat a routine break. but this one has kept him uncleared for nearly five months after he was supposed to be back on the field.
