Florida: Jon Sumrall Notes 'Question Marks' About Roster Competing in SEC
The Florida Gators enter a crucial month of training camp before trying to reverse a 4-8 season in 2025.
The Gators have several position battles going on at camp, including the much-hyped battle between Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. at quarterback.
Sumrall was concerned about his offensive line during spring football. While the offensive line shed fat this summer and added muscle mass, Florida needs three guys to step up to earn a starting spot before the team's opener against FAU on Sept. 5.
Florida has two tune-up games before starting its SEC schedule against Auburn on Sept. 19. During Wednesday's news conference, Sumrall was asked what kind of improvement his team needs to make to compete in the SEC this year.
Sumrall noted that several position groups with "question marks" need to show improvement and consistency.
"There are a lot of things," Sumrall said, via USA Today. "We've got to continue to grow as a team and come together. You have synergy. We've got to have certain guys elevate at certain spots to play winning-level football that still have some question marks. Just consistency.
There were, there were some flashes of times in the spring where I'm like, oh, this seemed to be really good, but the consistency wasn't always there."
Sumrall wants his players to "show up" at practice, and that means giving 100 percent effort regardless of how they feel.
"We have to get into a space where we bring it every day and you cannot calculate your effort you give by how you feel — like being tough is being at your best no matter what the circumstances are around you," Sumrall said.
"And so our guys got to get in a routine of like, every time we go out to practice, it's a great practice because we're showing up. We're going to show up."
The Gators have certainly brought it during summer workouts. The team made nearly seven tons of improvement in the weight room.
In August, Sumrall will demand that his players battle through the heat for the right to earn a starting job. A tough team is necessary for the Gators to compete in the SEC.
