If you’ve been watching the 2026 Formula 1 season unfold, you already know that Mercedes prodigy Kimi Antonelli has completely taken the sport by storm. The Italian teenager is currently sitting at the very top of the Drivers’ Championship standings.

But while everyone in the grandstands is loving the breakout performance, Alpine Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore believes this meteoric rise has actually given Mercedes boss Toto Wolff a massive, unexpected headache.

During a recent episode of the Beyond The Grid podcast, Briatore pointed out that Wolff spent a massive chunk of time openly courting Max Verstappen for a 2026 drive, only to realize he already had a generational talent sitting right under his nose.

The 2007 McLaren Deja Vu

When host Tom Clarkson suggested that the current dynamic at Mercedes feels a lot like McLaren’s infamous 2007 season, Briatore entirely agreed. If you know your F1 history, you know that Ron Dennis brought in a highly touted rookie named Lewis Hamilton to drive alongside reigning World Champion Fernando Alonso.

Dennis completely underestimated how incredibly fast the young Brit would be right out of the gate, leading to an absolute civil war inside the garage.

“Because Ron Dennis underestimate Hamilton completely, you remember?” Briatore explained during the interview. “Ron Dennis was saying ‘one of my drivers’… and Ron Dennis at the time was a superstar. I give to him because I believe was not a superstar. After that we arrive into the two guys Fernando and Hamilton. After one race Ron Dennis start understand how quick was [Hamilton]… now the same situation happened to Toto.”

It is a brilliantly accurate comparison. Wolff brought Antonelli into the factory team full-time last year, likely expecting a standard, manageable rookie learning curve. Instead, just like Dennis in 2007, Wolff is suddenly managing a young driver who is completely ignoring the script and establishing himself as an immediate, undeniable title threat.

The Max Verstappen Dilemma

The real “drama” for Wolff, according to Briatore, is how Antonelli’s raw speed completely blew up the paddock’s driver market expectations. For months, rumors swirled that Wolff was desperately trying to convince Verstappen to jump ship from Red Bull for the new regulation era.

“If you tell me 6 months ago between Antonelli and Max you take, you know, everybody take Max,” Briatore noted bluntly. “Now it is so Toto have a drama because he never expect Antonelli so quick.”

To be fair, this is the ultimate good-problem-to-have for a Team Principal. Mercedes is currently leading the Constructors’ Championship, and their young superstar is proving he can handle the immense pressure of fighting at the front of the pack.

Wolff no longer needs to stress about putting together a massive, complicated buyout package for a reigning champion; he just has to figure out how to manage the absolute rocket ship of a driver his own junior academy just created.
