The 2026 Formula 1 season has seen a massive resurgence for the Mercedes squad. With 19-year-old rookie sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli currently leading the Drivers’ Championship and George Russell sitting comfortably in third, the Silver Arrows have seemingly found a perfect harmony. Naturally, with such a competitive car, rumors regarding Max Verstappen potentially jumping ship to Brackley have continued to swirl.
However, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has officially poured cold water on any immediate blockbuster lineup changes.
As shared by Race+, Wolff was directly asked about the prospect of pairing Verstappen with Antonelli. While he didn’t completely rule it out for the future, he made it clear that uprooting the current team environment would be a mistake.
“We’re not afraid of having the two of them in the team at some point down the line, but as things stand today, we’re happy with how the dynamics between George and Kimi are working,” Wolff stated.

The partnership between Russell and Antonelli has exceeded all internal expectations. While Russell provides veteran leadership and crucial feedback on the W17’s complex setup and battery deployment, Antonelli has been an absolute revelation, racking up multiple victories and adapting instantly to the intense pressures of a factory seat.
For Mercedes, the focus is entirely on stability and maintaining their dual championship push. Wolff emphasized that introducing a massive personality and talent like Verstappen right now could needlessly disrupt their upward trajectory.
“We’ve made big progress as a team, which means adding a variable now is, I think, not the right thing for our long-term development,” he explained.
While the Austrian boss intentionally left the door slightly cracked for a potential Verstappen-Antonelli superteam “down the line,” George Russell’s seat appears incredibly safe for the immediate future. As long as the Brackley squad continues to execute on track, Wolff has zero intention of messing with a winning formula.
