The Yankees and Orioles rivalry doesn’t get the same billing as Yankees–Red Sox or Dodgers–Giants, but don’t let that fool you. There’s deep bad blood between these American League East rivals. Over the decades, they’ve traded enough stares, words, and punches to fill a highlight reel.

Here are five of the most memorable times things boiled over between the Bronx and Baltimore:
June 24, 1975 – Munson Charges the Mound
Thurman Munson wasn’t known for backing down. After being buzzed by Orioles pitcher Mike Torrez, the Yankees captain grounded out — then turned and charged the mound. Benches cleared fast. While no punches landed, the message was clear. It was an old-school retaliation war with both teams trading inside pitches and glares all game long.
May 19, 1998 – Benítez Drills Tino
This one got ugly. Orioles closer Armando Benítez hit Tino Martinez right after Bernie Williams crushed a three-run homer. Darryl Strawberry sprinted out of the dugout and threw a punch. Alan Mills responded with a haymaker. Five players were ejected. Several were suspended. It remains one of the most chaotic fights in Yankees history.
September 9, 2013 – Girardi vs. Showalter
No punches here — just pointed fingers and raised voices. Yankees manager Joe Girardi accused Baltimore of stealing signs. Orioles skipper Buck Showalter didn’t take it lightly. The two exchanged words so heated that both benches cleared just to keep them apart.
July 12, 2024 – Kjerstad Hit in the Head
Tensions reignited last summer when Clay Holmes hit Orioles rookie Heston Kjerstad in the helmet with a fastball. Kjerstad went down, and Brandon Hyde lost it. The Orioles manager charged toward the Yankees’ dugout. The benches cleared. Hyde was ejected. The Yankees said it was unintentional. Baltimore wasn’t so sure.
April 30, 2025 – Collision Sparks Fire Again
Kjerstad was at the center of the tension again Wednesday night. This time, it was a second-base collision with Yankees infielder Pablo Reyes. Reyes came down on Kjerstad’s head while trying to make a play. Kjerstad got up jawing. Reyes answered. Benches emptied — again. No punches, no ejections, but no shortage of tension.
