Three First Coast players made the quarterfinals of the Florida State Golf Association Senior Match Play Championship, June 22-25 at the Deerwood Country Club.
That's where the road to the title match ended for them. Mark Spencer of Jacksonville, Chuck Kirk of Middleburg and Dave Reynolds of St. Augustine dropped their matches and Glenn Pryzbylski of Lecanto eventually won the championship over Ryan Howison of Jupiter in 19 holes, with a birdie at the last.
Spencer tied for first in stroke-play qualifying at 4-under 140 and Kirk tied for third at 3-under. Reynolds (144) tied for 12th, Billy Lodise of St. Augustine (146) tied for 19th and Richard Ames of Orange Park and Jim Loftin of St. Augustine (147) tied for 24th.
Loftin, Ames and Lodise fell in the first round. Spencer advanced to the quarters by beating Rich Buckner of Hobe Sound in 25 holes; Kirk downed Chin Park of St. Petersburg 2-up; and Reynolds topped David Tassell of Jupiter 2 and 1.
Spencer won his second-round match 1-up over Todd Schmitt of Orlando; and Kirk and Reynolds scored routs, Kirk beating David Owen of Ocala 5 and 4 and Reynolds beating Charles Campbell of Sarasota 6 and 5.
Pryzbylski ousted Reynolds 7 and 6; Howison beat Kirk 3 and 2; and J.D. Schlotterback of Naples edged Spencer 3 and 1 in the afternoon matches.
Worth noting: Spencer, 55, played 96 holes in three days. After the 36 holes of qualifying, his three match-play rounds added up to 60 holes.
Keaton Fannin of Ponte Vedra Beach fired a bogey-free 69 on June 24 at Eagle Harbor and won the boys division of the Greater Jacksonville Junior Championship by three shots at 4-under-par 140.
Brendan Walrath of Jacksonville (72—143) was second and Ethan Grossman of Jacksonville and Christopher Grota of St. Augustine (144) tied for third. Will McGready of Eagle Harbor (146) finished solo fifth.
Nina Santiago of St. Johns shot 73 in the first round and held on to win by one shot over Simryn Chokshi of Jacksonville and Riley Powell of St. Augustine at 6-over 150. Chloe Pierce of Ponte Vedra Beach, Oliva Connell of St. Augustine and Addison Kipnis of Fleming Island tied for fourth, another four shots back.
Peyton Randolph of St. Johns shot 152 to win the Futures Tour division by 12 shots.
Fannin, Walrath, Grossman, Grota and McGready now move on to play in the 72nd Florida Junior Boys Championship, June 30-July 2 at the Cabot Citrus Farms Karoo and Roost Courses in Brooksville. They'll have a lot of company from the First Coast in the field.
Also playing are: Aubrey Fellows, Michael Rattigan and Brady Dougan of Jacksonville; Benny Ossi, Jude Johnson, Joey Hage, James Nagle, Jonathan Brubaker, Cooper Franklin, Easton Oliva, Beck Patrick, Ellis Masotti and Maxwell Morgan of Ponte Vedra; Jonah and Jaden Nacional, Jaspreet Kondal, Samuel Ha and Ambrose Kinnare of St. Augustine; Jack Cole and Jay Huntley of Jacksonville Beach; Ryan Houck of Fleming Island; Charlie Hipp of St. Johns; and Turner Hersey of Palatka.
Elize Nograbat of St. Johnson finished solo fourth in the 13-15 year old division of the Florida State Junior Girls Championship June 22-24 at the Mayacoo Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach. Sophia Moody of Fleming Island (226) tied for eighth.
Lily Chiang and Sahana Chokshi of Jacksonville tied for 10th in the 16-18 division at 1-over 217.
The entry deadline for the 65th Jacksonville Area Golf Association Amateur Championship, presented by Pinnacle Financial Partners, is July 10.
There are fewer than 20 openings available for the tournament, which has a field of 96 players. Golfers between 16 and 59 years old who live in the nine-county area surrounding Jacksonville with a USGA handicap of 2.9 or less are eligible.
The entry fee is $375. World Amateur Ranking points are available to the top finishers. Danny Erickson of Ponte Vedra Beach is the defending champion.

Two teams at the JAGA Kid-Am at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club Lagoon Course on June 22 posted gross scores of 12-under 58s under the scramble format, with two junior golfers and two JAGA directors on each team.
Gregg Dieboldt, John Caden, Danny Eckles and Jenna Wilson; and Lee Fields, Jack Morehead, Jarrod Gandy and Emma Wells, shot the 58s. Rufus Dowell, Jeff Adams, Ronit Singh and Krishna Clark won the net division with a 57, edging Scott Stutzman, Hudson Stutzman, Peter Karpen and William Lyle by two shots.
