Fifth-year option tracker for 2017 first-round picks

The deadline for NFL teams to option the fifth year on rookie contracts for their 2017 first-round picks is about a week away, and some clubs are getting out ahead of the pack.

The Bills picked up the fifth-year option on All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White on April 23. White has emerged as one of the game's top CBs since Buffalo selected him 27th overall three years ago.

Beginning Dec. 30 of 2019, teams have been afforded the opportunity to extend rookie deals of any player selected in the 2017 draft and to exercise the fifth-year options for their first-round selections from that draft. The window to exercise said option closes at 11:59:59 p.m. ET on May 4.

Below are the 32 first-round picks from the 2017 draft and their fifth-year option statuses:

1. Myles Garrett, DE, Cleveland Browns: Picked up. The Browns picked up his fifth-year option on April 27, sources told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

2. Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Chicago Bears:

3. Solomon Thomas, DE, San Francisco 49ers:

4. Leonard Fournette, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars:

5. Corey Davis, WR, Tennessee Titans:

6. Jamal Adams, S, New York Jets:

7. Mike Williams, WR, Los Angeles Chargers:

8. Christian McCaffrey, RB, Carolina Panthers: Extended. The Panthers signed McCaffrey to a four-year extension on April 16, the team announced.

9. John Ross, WR, Cincinnati Bengals:

10. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs:

11. Marshon Lattimore, CB, New Orleans Saints:

12. Deshaun Watson, QB, Houston Texans: Picked up. The Texans exercised Waton's option April 28.

13. Haason Reddick, LB, Arizona Cardinals:

14. Derek Barnett, DE, Philadelphia Eagles: Picked up. The Eagles announced on April 28 that they pick up Barnett's option.

15. Malik Hooker, S, Indianapolis Colts:

This hurts. Any player on this list would've been a better pick than Reddick, other than Trubisky and Corey Davis. Sucks even more when you see that half of this list are All Pros.

Well, to be fair, we didn't have the opportunity to draft any of those guys, and Trubisky has been way better than Reddick.

Reddick was a better pick than Trubisky.

Nothing worse for a team than a QB like Trubes. I’d rather have Rosen.

This is such an EXTREMELY bad take that I don't even know what to say.

Reddick has started 20 games in 3 NFL seasons while being completely healthy. Each season, his play has gotten worse the longer he's been on the field.

Trubisky has started 41 games in three seasons and went to the 2018 Pro Bowl. He was 4th in QBR in 2018. He started a playoff game and the Bears lost by 1 point to the eventual Super Bowl Champions.

I don't think that Trubisky is good, but Reddick has been AWFUL. It wasn't a great draft class in retrospect, but the Cards got more from Michael Floyd than they got from Reddick.

Trubisky is an albatross and massive negative asset at the only position in which you cannot have one.

He was 30th in ANY/A last year.

He was 18th in ANY/A when he was a Pro Bowler (lol at thinking that matters) in 2018, tied with Eli’s corpse and Jameis.

He was 19th in QB DVOA in 2018. Bears won despite him, lol.

Eagles lost to the Saints after they beat the Bears. You’re confusing for the year before.

Mitchell Biscuit boy is worse than Reddick just off the fact he put a stranglehold on a Super Bowl caliber team with a championship defense.

He’s a QB which makes it much, much worse.

How can he be an albatross when he’s making $9 million this season and they can toss him overboard next season?

Arguing that a starting QB is somehow a worse pick than a backup linebacker is sheer madness.

Oh I disagree QB in by far a more important position and if your bad at QB it effects your team way more than your back up LB

Just because he’s a starter doesn’t make him better.

who’s holding there team back more Trubisky or Reddick

I’d take Corey Davis over Reddick all day. In fact, I’d like the cards to go get Corey Davis if tenn lets him go

Arizona Cardinals

Linebacker Haason Reddick

Reddick has never seemed to find a foothold in Arizona, where the Cardinals didn't manage to convert the 2017 No. 13 overall pick's versatility and athleticism into a meaningful role. They already have made moves to replace Reddick by signing De'Vondre Campbell and now using a top-10 pick on Isaiah Simmons.

The Cardinals will likely decline Reddick's fifth-year option, and it's probable that they'll try to shop him for a late-round pick. The first call they'll make will likely be to the Panthers, whose coach, Matt Rhule, was formerly Reddick's coach at Temple.
