29-year-old Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo will be sidelined for far more than just his country's crucial World Cup Group B finale against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday.
His cleats-up challenge on Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone, one of the tournament hosts' most vital performers, resulted in a direct red card during Qatar's 6-0 defeat. FIFA has now handed Madibo a five-game suspension.
Kone was rushed to a Vancouver area hospital where he had surgery for fractured tibia and fibula bones in his left leg. He's been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup, as per The Mirror US.

Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch and Kone both revealed that Madibo sought to offer a personal apology in the dressing room following the game. Kone subsequently confirmed via Instagram that the Qatari midfielder had reached out to him privately.
"You can't even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers," Kone shared. Madibo paid a visit to the Canadian international at the medical facility on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old features for Al-Wakrah in the Qatar Star League, currently on loan from parent club Al-Duhail. In 2014, the Sudan-born player joined the renowned Aspire Academy in Qatar and has since accumulated 53 caps for the national squad, including two at the 2026 World Cup.
Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui was compelled to adjust his lineup for his team's game against Bosnia and expressed regret over the incident's effect on his important player. "He was very affected for his injury, never he was intentional," Lopetegui insisted to media this week.

The suspension represents the most severe penalty handed down by FIFA for a World Cup incident since Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez's notorious bite on Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during a corner kick at the 2014 tournament. Suarez, who was mid-transfer between Liverpool and Barcelona at the time, received a nine-month ban from all soccer and a four-month domestic suspension.
Both players would have proven valuable for their respective national teams on Wednesday during matchday three of the World Cup.
Kone made an appearance at Vancouver Stadium in a wheelchair, but unable to contribute on the field, Canada fell 2-1 to Switzerland, finishing second in Group B.
