Caitlin Clark, of course, heard all the theories.

After the Indiana Fever superstar was a late scratch last week due to a back injury, there were all kinds of theories about why Indiana hadn't disclosed the injury before ruling Clark out.

There's no way to know for sure, but the reality is likely that Clark was hurting worse as the day went along. It probably wasn't anything nefarious or secretive.

Clark, speaking with reporters recently, tried to make that point.

She shared the timeline -- she told her mom she wasn't playing at 4:47 p.m., and the news came out at 5:20 p.m., Clark said.

“So one of the most important people in my life found out 40 minutes before you guys," Clark told the media after her return in the Fever's ensuing game against the Valkyries.

That quote was used as part of a new feature by The Ringer which wonders if "The Caitlin Clark Machine is turning on Caitlin."

It's a fascinating look at what makes the Clark narratives catch attention. Pretty much anything she does becomes a headline.

Shoot, this article itself is an example. That's just the attention that Clark has from fans of women's basketball and even beyond that.

Her talent is special, and her impact on the sport is special, too.

So when something unexpected happens with Clark, people talk about it. Yes, the Internet can often blow things out of proportion, but the theme is that Clark is going to have attention on her for as long as she's involved in her sport.

And yeah, her mother is paying attention, too. Mom just gets the updates a bit before anyone else does.
