Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James made his NBA playoff debut on Friday night, playing the final 38 seconds of the Lakers' 116-104 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Whenever he eventually got the chance to check his phone after the game, he probably would not have expected to see his name all over social media because of another major event in the sports world on Friday — Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft.
But when Shedeur Sanders' unexpected slide continued past the second round, sports fans on social media began making the same joke about James and Sanders on draft night.

The comparisons between 20-year-old James and 23-year-old Sanders are fascinating given their parentage.
The narrative about Bronny, son of LeBron James, is that his dad's NBA legacy and open wish to play with his son before retirement helped facilitate the Lakers' 2024 second-round NBA Draft pick, even though his play in college at USC did not justify the selection.
The influence of Shedeur's father, Hall of Famer and current Colorado coach Deion Sanders, is believed to be one of the reasons he fell the opposite direction in the NFL Draft, despite a first-round draft grade.
From a pick-by-pick standpoint, the comparison between the draft situations of James and Sanders is more straightforward — and many found it funny on social media.
"Bronny James really got drafted higher than Shedeur Sanders," said a fan on X.
James was the No. 55 overall selection in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. As of Friday night, Sanders had been passed on at least once by every NFL team across 102 picks in rounds one, two and three.
"Bronny really got drafted higher than Shedeur Sanders," posted a popular Lakers account that got more than 3,000 likes.
"It’s now official," said a user. "More teams passed on Shedeur Sanders than Bronny James."
"Bronny James went before Shedeur Sanders," an X user wrote. "Spare me the outrage."
"How the (expletive) did Bronny James get drafted higher than Shedeur Sanders???!!!" one fan wrote in disbelief as the NFL Draft unfolded.
If there's one thing James' rookie season in Los Angeles has shown, it is that hard work will result in opportunities, even if it only starts with the last few seconds of a playoff game.
Players like Bronny and Shedeur will never escape being their dad's sons in the minds of some people, but they can still create their own legacies.
Wherever Sanders lands after the NFL Draft concludes on Saturday, that will be the path he must follow as well.
