Vote for Dan Majerle Hustle Award

Fan Voting for Majerle Hustle Award Underway

Posted: April 16, 2005

Suns fans once again have an opportunity to help select the winner of the Dan Majerle Hustle Award by casting their vote on Suns.com. Fan balloting will take place now through April 22 at Noon local Phoenix time (3 p.m. ET).

Created by Suns Chairman & CEO Jerry Colangelo, the award is presented at the end of each season to the Suns player who most personified the qualities of Suns Ring of Honor member Dan Majerle. At Majerle’s Ring of Honor induction on March 9, 2003, Colangelo said, “When you think of Dan Majerle, you think of a guy who gave maximum effort in every game, every practice…in everything he did. It is this work ethic that inspired the creation of the award.”

The winner of the 2005 Majerle Hustle Award will be selected based on the results of five voting categories: Suns fans, Suns players, Suns coaches, Suns employees and by Majerle himself. Each voting group carries equal weight in the final selection. In addition to the award, a $9,000 donation will be made to the charity of the winning player’s choice. Bo Outlaw won the inaugural award in 2003, followed by Casey Jacobsen in 2004.

Steve Nash, Phoenix Suns
Phoenix was one game out of last place in the Pacific Division in 2003-04. Nash (15.8 ppg, 11.5, 3rd in double-doubles) steps onto the scene and the Suns suddenly have the league’s best record.

Fan Voting 2005: Defensive Player of the Year

Defensive Player of the Year

Shawn Marion, Phoenix Suns
Marion is on pace to become only the second player (David Robinson, 1991-92) to rank in the top five in rebounds (11.5 rpg, 3rd) and steals (2.0, 4th). He also posts 1.4 bpg.

Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix Suns
It’s not often that a 20-point per game scorer can raise his average by five points in a single season, but Stoudemire ranks fifth in the league in scoring this year (25.8 ppg).

I agree, Marion seems like the best choice. For some reason, the first name to occur to me was Richardson, but I think Marion makes more sense.

Who'dya vote for?

I propose we make this the official "Who'dya vote for?" thread. Mine:

MVP: Steve Nash (even though Shaquille O'Neal will win)
Rookie: Emeka Okafor
Defensive: Tim Duncan
Sixth Man: Ricky Davis (Ben Gordon's minutes have been too erratic)
Most Improved: Dwyane Wade
Coach: Mike D'Antoni

God, what a cumbersome interface that is! For someone with a dial-up connection, it would take probably 15 minutes to vote in all six categories.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that...

Still, the first two times, the award went to someone who didn't really contribute all that much to the team. Sort of like when your science fair project sucks and they give you an "Honorable Mention" so that you don't feel bad. Maybe Marion can start a new tradition of having the award go to players who are actually, you know, good.

Wow. I think I picked the exact same thing.

Pretty much my list as well, except I went with Bowen as Defensive.

Shawn Marion. That was my thought as soon as I saw this thread title. It seems we are all in agreement on this one.

No one hustles more than Steve Nash. Marion just has God-given ability.

Stevie gets my vote, and I don't think Marion is even close. Nash takes all kinds of punishment from screeners when he's chasing guards around but never backs off fighting through picks. He'll go into the middle and set a screen on Amare's defender even though he knows he's going to get knocked about. Has Marion ever set a pick for anyone?

I think Q's Game is more like Majerle's with the taking of charges, and shooting the three's and he does hustle, but overall hustle with out Majerle's name in there definitly goes to shawn.
