For the first time in three seasons, the Orioles did not make the playoffs, finishing fifth in the always-tough American League East. Baltimore fired manager Brandon Hyde, who was in the middle of his seventh season, after a 15-28 start and replaced him with Tony Mansolino, who went 60-59 the rest of the season. During the offseason, the Orioles hired Craig Albernaz. The former Tampa Bay player was an associate manager with Cleveland before receiving his first managerial job.

The Orioles made a big splash during the offseason, signing first baseman Pete Alonso to a 5-year, $155 million free agent contract. Alonso hit 53 home runs during his Rookie of the Year season in 2009 with the New York Mets and hit 37, 40, 46, 34 and 38 home runs the past five seasons.

Baltimore also added right-handed pitcher Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays for a bunch of prospects, traded for outfielder Taylor Ward and lost center fielder Cedric Mullins to the Rays through free agency.
