The Atlanta Falcons finished their first padded training camp practice on Monday, but not without a few notable injuries. Team reporter Tori McElhaney reported that both defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand and right tackle Wanya Morris sustained injuries and did not return.
While we don't yet know the specifics of Hand's injury, Morris reportedly suffered some sort of leg injury and had trouble putting weight on his foot.
"After the first couple of team periods, offensive tackle Wanya Morris spent a while working with trainers on the sideline after coming up limping following a play," wrote McElhaney. "He stayed out for the very next rep, but couldn't manage to put much weight on his front leg so trainers took a look at him. Though he stayed out for the practice's entirety, walking gingerly up and down the sideline with the team, he did not return to action."
Offensive lineman Kaleb McGary retired in April, leaving a big hole at the right tackle position. Thus far, the team has struggled to replace the former first-round pick. The Falcons signed veteran Jawaan Taylor to a one-year, $5 million contract, but the former Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle has yet to practice due to an injury.
Atlanta acquired Morris via trade with the Kansas City Chiefs in an effort to give the team some additional depth on the right side. With the two former Chiefs teammates banged up, Michael Jerrell continues to get first-team reps at practice.
On Friday, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski said he expected Taylor to return soon but did not give a timeline.
"In the next few days/weeks is the hope," Stefanski replied when asked about Taylor's return. "He continues to work very hard. He's in every meeting. He's pushing and I think he's getting closer."
While it's certainly not time to panic, the Falcons' right tackle situation is worth monitoring as camp rolls on.
