The Atlanta Falcons are officially moving on to the preseason after wrapping up their final open practice on Wednesday afternoon. The team released its first depth chart for this Friday's matchup against the Denver Broncos, and according to head coach Kevin Stefanski, we can expect to see the starters.
In today's Falcons Wire Recap, Stefanski lays out his plan for the preseason opener, Tua Tagovailoa prepares to make team debut, Michael Penix Jr. gives an update on his knee, and we examine Atlanta's depth chart for Friday's game against the Broncos.
The Falcons are going with Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback against the Denver Broncos. Eight months after being benched by the Miami Dolphins, Tagovailoa will officially make his Atlanta debut on Friday night. However, head coach Kevin Stefanski made sure to point out that he wasn't declaring Tua the starting QB going forward.
Stefanski said the starters, including Tagovailoa, will play about 10 snaps. Cooper Rush will serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback, while undrafted rookie Jack Strand will close out the game.
The Broncos are also expecting to play their starters, but Bo Nix will not play, according to head coach Sean Payton. Nonetheless, the Falcons will get to see how they match up against an elite defense that made it to the AFC Championship game.
The Falcons' first depth chart had a few interesting wrinkles. The team listed Brandon Dorlus at the defensive end/edge starter, which could be Jeff Ulbrich's answer to losing both Jalon Walker and James Pearce (suspension TBD). Rookie Avieon Terrell was listed as the primary backup to starting nickel cornerback Darnay Holmes.
Zachariah Branch was listed as the team's starting punt returnerPenix was listed as the fourth quarterback with an injury notation, however, this feels like this may have been to avoid any QB controversy with Tagovailoa making the start.
Aside from backing up the NFL's best running back, veteran Brian Robinson Jr. was listed as the team's starting kick returner on the depth chart. The former Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers standout was mic'd up at practice. Watch below.
