The Atlanta Falcons' sixth training camp practice ended with a potentially devastating injury to second-year linebacker Jalon Walker. The former first-round pick was expected to play a big role this season, especially considering James Pearce Jr.'s likely suspension.
In today's Falcons Wire Recap, Bijan Robinson becomes the NFL's highest-paid running back, Atlanta signs former Chiefs defensive lineman Marlon Tuipulotu, and one league insider provides a not-so-great update on Walker's knee injury.
Second-year edge rusher Jalon Walker went down during Tuesday's practice and had to be carted off the field. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Walker is feared to have torn his ACL.
"Falcons promising edge Jalon Walker is feared to have torn his ACL, per me and Steve Wyche," Rapoport reported. "A potential brutal injury for this defense. Walker will have an MRI to confirm the injury from practice today, which drew an emotional reaction from his team."
Walker finished second among rookies with 5.5 sacks last season. Although, it sounds like the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore campaign may be over before it began. Look for Samson Ebukam and Azeez Ojulari to fill in for Walker in the meantime.
The Atlanta Falcons signed running back Bijan Robinson to a three-year, $75 million contract extension on Tuesday morning. Robinson is set to become the NFL's highest-paid running back, and with 5,648 career yards from scrimmage, there is no player more deserving.
The Falcons have now locked up four key members of their offense, including wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts. All three former top-10 picks are now under contract for the foreseeable future, allowing the team to focus on its quarterback situation.
The Falcons signed former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu to their 90-man training camp roster and placed linebacker DeAngelo Malone on the reserve/PUP list. Tuipulotu, a former sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, has appeared in 33 games over five NFL seasons, with two career starts.
The 27-year-old can provide additional depth behind Brandon Dorlus and Maason Smith at defensive tackle. Tuipulotu has recorded 48 combined tackles (24 solo), five TFLs and three sacks for the Eagles and Chiefs.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and offensive tackle Wanya Morris were limited at Tuesday's practice. Tagovailoa is managing a back injury and the team is likely just being cautious with the veteran QB. Morris appeared to suffer a leg injury on Monday and never returned, so the fact that he's participating at all is a great sign. Defensive tackle Da'Shawn Hand was not present on Tuesday, but head coach Kevin Stefanski said he doesn't expect it to be a long-term issue.
It's hard to get excited about Falcons highlights when Jalon Walker just suffered a possible season-ending injury. Tagovailoa and Penix haven't really had much of a quarterback battle thus far. Tagovailoa has been limited with a back injury and Penix still hasn't been cleared for contact. There weren't many clips from Tuesday's practice, but here are a few we found on social media.
Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about running back Bijan Robinson's new contract after today's training camp practice at Flowery Branch, saying in part:
"Very excited for him, excited for us. … I just knew throughout this whole process that it would be a process and felt good about where we were. I think everyone understands how we feel about Bijan the person and Bijan the player."
The Falcons will be back on Wednesday for another practice. We expect head coach Kevin Stefanski to have an update on Walker by then.
