The Atlanta Falcons are just about a week out from training camp and there is one battle which is going to be at the top of everyone's watch list each and every day of practice.
In what may be the most high profile quarterback competition in the league this summer, Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa are going to duke it out until new head coach Kevin Stefanski makes a determination as to which one gives the team a better chance to win now.
Tagovailoa has created some momentum this offseason largely because Penix has yet to be fully cleared, and others around the league are starting to see it as well. In an article this week, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report projected the biggest battles across the league, and for Atlanta, he went with the newcomer.
Kay pointed out what many others are saying in that while Penix may have a higher ceiling ultimately, Tagovailoa gives the team their best chance to win games now and compete in an NFC South which is still very much there for the taking.
The health of Penix -- something that still cannot be known right now given that he has yet to be fully cleared as the clock ticks towards the start of camp -- is a major factor here. Every day he is not on the field is another day not only does Tagovailoa get those first team 11 on 11 reps, but also build a chemistry and rapport with the receivers as well as learning Stefanski's system.
Given both of their injury history and at times struggles throughout their NFL careers, it seems more likely than not that Atlanta winds up playing both Penix and Tagovailoa at some point this season.
With that being said, the person who wins the job right out of the gate and is starting in Week 1 will have the opportunity to prove that they are the one who should be starting as long as they're healthy.
Tagovailoa still has a good bit to prove in camp, but there's no questioning anymore that he has jumped at least slightly ahead of Penix right now. It should be a fascinating next several weeks as the two left-handed gunslingers try to duke it out and show their new head coach and their fanbase why they are the best man for the job.
