Veterans for the Atlanta Falcons will report to training camp at Flowery Branch in three weeks, and thus will begin the official portion of the team's starting quarterback battle for the 2026 season.
So far this offseason Atlanta's QB1 has been free agent pickup Tua Tagovailoa, who was released by the Miami Dolphins and signed for the veteran minimum. Tagovailoa will be competing with 2024 top-10 pick Michael Penix Jr., who's still recovering from the ACL tear that ended his 2025 campaign early.
Both quarterbacks have an extensive history of injuries and neither impressed last season. Right now Tagovailoa has to be considered the favorite to start Week 1 given the amount of reps he's gotten with the first-team unit while Penix has been sidelined. If that's the case it makes Tua an intriguing long-shot candidate to win Comeback Player of the Year, according to Alex Kay at Bleacher Report.
There's some solid logic, here. While Tagovailoa struggled the last couple of years in Miami, it's worth noting that the Dolphins have the league's worst offensive supporting cast going into this season, in a tier all to themselves.
In Atlanta it will be the exact opposite case. Tua will have three elite talents at the skill positions and a far-superior offensive line to work with - one that could be one of the NFL's best under new assistant Bill Callahan. If Tagovailoa can shake off his issues from Miami he will have a very strong case for the award.
Of course, The same can be said for Penix, who's in a very similar situation.

"If Tagovailoa seizes the QB1 role, he'll have the elite supporting cast—led by first-round skill position stars in Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson—needed to re-emerge as one of the NFL's top passers. Tagovailoa's 45-1 odds for Comeback Player of the Year are simply too alluring to ignore."
