When the Falcons drafted Anterio Thompson, he looked like an upside addition who would likely need some time to crack the team’s rotation on the interior. That’s still true, but injury is delaying his chance to make his case for any playing time at all in 2026.
Thompson hasn’t been with the team much or practiced owing to the injury, which we haven’t gotten much in the way of clarity about. What we do know is that he’s now been placed on the non-football injury list by the team, which comes after rookies reported for training camp on Friday.
The hope is that Thompson returns soon and gets to make his case for playing time; if he can’t we might be looking at a lost 2026 for the rookie. That would be a shame given that the Falcons clearly saw something they liked in Thompson, who spent 2025 with the Washington Huskies and flashed some promise as a disruptive force on their defensive line. With all-world defensive line coach Nate Ollie overseeing his development, there’s a chance that potential translates into a role as a high-end reserve, but that’s all conjecture until the rookie gets out there and can show what he can do.
Atlanta’s defensive front will almost certainly include Zach Harrison, Brandon Dorlus, Maason Smith, Da’Shawn Hand, and LaCale London, with Chris Williams, Ross Blacklock, Carlos Allen Jr., Devonnsha Maxwell, and Thompson competing for a spot or two and practice squad slots. The sooner Thompson can get back out there, the better, so we’ll hope it’s very soon.
