Arvid Lindblad's commentary appearance during IND vs ENG 1st ODI surprises fans

England's decision to bat first at Edgbaston unravelled almost immediately, with Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar reducing the hosts to a precarious position and handing India their first real foothold of a miserable white-ball tour. Amid the carnage, Sky Sports Cricket produced a guest few viewers saw coming.

Arvid Lindblad, the 18-year-old Racing Bulls driver and the only rookie on the 2026 Formula 1 grid, appeared in the commentary box wearing a Red Bull cap and a broad grin.

The appearance was not quite as random as it first seemed. Lindblad is Britain's newest F1 star and carries Indian heritage through his mother, making an England versus India fixture at Edgbaston a rather more logical fit than the initial reaction suggested.

Fans react to an unexpected guest

Social media responded with a mixture of bafflement, amusement and, in some quarters, genuine warmth. The confusion was immediate and widespread as viewers tried to work out what an F1 driver was doing on a cricket broadcast. "Guys, why is an F1 driver doing comms for a cricket match?" wrote one user, summing up the prevailing mood among a large section of viewers.

Meanwhile others found in his presence a convenient stick with which to beat England's crumbling batting order. "Might as well throw the pads on Arvid Lindblad and send him in to bat," wrote one frustrated England supporter. "What a shitshow."

Fan account Gaurav Kadam framed it more positively, posting a screenshot of the broadcast. "Special Guest at India vs England 1st ODI: Red Bull F1 Driver Arvid Lindblad," he wrote.

The Indian connection behind the booking

Lindblad's presence at an India fixture carries genuine significance. Born in Virginia Water, Surrey, to a Swedish father and a British-Indian mother, he became only the third driver of Indian origin to race in Formula 1 after Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok.

His full name, Arvid Anand Olof Lindblad, reflects that heritage directly, with Anand taken from his maternal grandfather. His grandparents were doctors who met while studying in Delhi before moving to the United Kingdom from Punjab.

The driver races under the British flag but carries British, Swedish and Indian flags on his helmet design and travelled to India for the first time in December 2024 to explore his family's roots. He has spoken openly about wanting to improve his Hindi and Punjabi.

The licence admission that stole the show

Lindblad also used the appearance to address a peculiarity of his own career, namely that a man who races at 300kmh in Formula 1 cannot legally drive himself to the supermarket in Britain.

"It is a bit sad that I haven't got my licence," he told Sky Sports Cricket during coverage of the first ODI. The 18-year-old, who sits 11th in the drivers' championship with 20 points from his first 10 races, admitted the joke has now worn thin.

"It was funny for a bit, and now it is just getting a bit silly, so I am working on it," Lindblad said. He confirmed progress is finally being made, having passed his theory test and taken the first practical step this week.

"I had my first driving lesson yesterday, so yeah, I need to get it done," he added. Lindblad turns 19 next month, having become eligible to drive on UK roads back in August 2024.
