Expert breaks down 3 priorities for KC to address before training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs made savvy moves to retool their roster during the 2026 NFL offseason, but one expert isn't so sure that the team's work is finished.

This week, Bleacher Report analyst Brent Sobleski outlined three priorities that Kansas City's front office should consider addressing before training camp starts in July: to settle on a new right tackle, add another wide receiver, and prepare Justin Fields to start.

"With Patrick Mahomes' latest contract extension, the Kansas City Chiefs' heaviest offseason lift is now done. Though everything else the team must continue to address still involves its franchise quarterback.

"As of now, Mahomes' timetable isn't known. Considering he suffered a torn ACL and LCL in December, the odds of him being Kansas City's starting quarterback to open the 2026 campaign remains in doubt.

"In the meantime, the Chiefs' offense must be built around Fields. The unit isn't settled at right tackle, either. KC's coaching staff wants an open competition between Jaylon Moore, Esa Pole and undrafted rookie Khalil Benson.

"Furthermore, the Chiefs' wide receivers shouldn't be considered a reliable group. Aside from fifth-round rookie Cyrus Allen, who is a good fit in the slot, Kansas City didn't add anything to the position and should consider all available options to provide a boost. Is a Tyreek Hill reunion possible?" — Brent Sobleski

The Chiefs have an open position battle brewing at right tackle between Jaylon Moore, Khalil Benson, and Esa Pole this offseason. Whether Moore, the leading candidate for the job, gets the nod or one of the Chiefs’ other two linemen, protection for Mahomes next season will be of paramount importance on the right side.

While Rice and Tyquan Thornton have the talent to give Kansas City meaningful production in the receiving corps, a true number one alongside Travis Kelce will benefit the team greatly. Stefon Diggs and Tyreek Hill are still available in free agency.

As for Fields, the Ohio State product will be needed for Kansas City in the event that Mahomes is unable to start in Week 1. He’s shown prowess as a dual-threat quarterback but has only completed over 62.7 percent of his passes once in his career in 2024, making his preparation for next season of the utmost importance to keep Kansas City afloat if need be.
