The New York Giants are fully committed to pursuing former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, with mutual interest reported from both sides. The Giants have emerged as one of the leading contenders to hire him as their next head coach.
Although the organization appears focused on Harbaugh as its primary target, it continues to interview other candidates as a contingency should it fail to secure its top choice.
Former Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey recently spoke with TMZ about the leading candidates for the team’s head coaching vacancy, including John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski.
"I’ve been hearing the same things. A coach of that caliber with that kind of pedigree and experience doesn’t come around often. So, besides looking for the one-hit wonders like a new coach or something, to get someone who’s done it before -- that’s a champion and a winner and this guy is available -- so I think it probably makes the most sense in my mind, but again, I’m not around operations all day,” Shockey told TMZ.
Given the Giants’ strong interest in bringing in Harbaugh, many have drawn comparisons between the top coaching candidate and Tom Coughlin, under whom Shockey spent the majority of his tenure in New York.
Selected by the Giants with the 14th overall pick in 2002, Shockey spent the first six seasons of his NFL career with the franchise. He earned four Pro Bowl selections during that time and was renowned for his physical style and willingness to embrace contact after the catch.
Shockey won a national championship at the University of Miami and captured Super Bowl titles under both Tom Coughlin and Sean Payton during his professional career.
Harbaugh served on the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff during Shockey’s years with the Giants, and both men left the NFC East in 2008.
Harbaugh remains the clear top target for the Giants ahead of his formal interview, and Shockey joins several former players and NFL analysts who view the Giants as a strong fit for the veteran coach.
