Former MLB outfielder Lenny Dykstra is facing potential new legal trouble after Pennsylvania State Police say drugs and paraphernalia were discovered during a traffic stop early on New Year’s Day.

According to ESPN, the incident occurred just after midnight in Pike County, roughly 25 miles east of Scranton, where Dykstra resides. A trooper with the Blooming Grove patrol unit pulled over a 2015 GMC Sierra for alleged motor vehicle violations. Dykstra, 62, was a passenger in the vehicle.

In a brief statement released by police, authorities said the passenger was found to have “narcotics and narcotic-related equipment/paraphernalia,” adding that charges will be filed. Police did not specify which substances were allegedly found or what specific charges may be forthcoming.

Pennsylvania State Police records listed Dykstra as the “arrestee” in the report, though details surrounding custody remain limited. Messages seeking comment were left at a phone number linked to Dykstra, while his attorney, Matthew Blit, said a formal statement would be issued later.

Blit later told TMZ that Dykstra expects to be cleared in the matter, emphasizing that his client was not the driver of the vehicle.

“Lenny Dykstra was merely a passenger in a vehicle that did not belong to him,” Blit said. “Undeniably, the actual driver and owner was taken into custody at the scene under the suspicion of driving under the influence.”

Blit added that Dykstra “was not accused of being under the influence of any substance at the scene, nor was he arrested or taken into custody at the scene,” and maintained that any charges would be “swiftly absolved.”

Dykstra is best known for his gritty style of play during a 12-season Major League Baseball career from 1985 to 1996, including a key role on the New York Mets’ 1986 World Series championship team. Nicknamed “Nails,” he later played for the Philadelphia Phillies and earned three All-Star selections.

Following his retirement from baseball, Dykstra transitioned into business but has encountered repeated legal issues over the years. In 2018, he was arrested in New Jersey on drug-related charges following an incident involving an Uber driver; he later pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, with more serious charges reduced.

Earlier cases have included arrests and convictions related to theft, drug possession, and federal bankruptcy fraud.
