Ex-New York Jets first-round pick Darron Lee reportedly asked ChatGPT how to deal with an “unresponsive” person a day before his girlfriend was found dead. Prosecutors introduced Lee’s messages with the AI software after the former linebacker appeared in court Monday, according to Local 3 News.
In the messages, Lee asked ChatGPT what to do if his fiancée wasn’t “waking up or responding,” per Local 3 News.
In the message with ChatGPT, Lee claimed his fiancée, Gabriella Perpetuo, engaged in self harm.
That’s inconsistent with what Lee told police. He claimed that Perpetuo fell through a glass shower door. Testimony from investigators claimed blood was found throughout the house and that Perpetuo had stab wounds, black eyes and bite marks, per Local 3 News. Lee reportedly asked the AI software what injuries were consistent with falling in the shower prior to Perpetuo’s body being found.
Lee, 31, was arrested in February and charged with first-degree murder in Perpetuo’s death. Lee is eligible for the death penalty, though it’s unclear whether prosecutors will seek capital punishment.
Lee, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, spent five seasons in the league. His first three came with the Jets, but was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the 2019 NFL season. He then played two games with the Buffalo Bills in 2020. Lee signed on with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021, but was injured and never appeared in a game with the team.
