The Denver Broncos made an unexpected move earlier this week when they fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton handles the team's play calling, and Lombardi coached under him for 15 years, making it a curious move. Former NFL coach Jay Gruden implied that Payton fired Lombardi as a scapegoat.
Lombardi doesn't see it that way.
“Well, we made it to the AFC Championship,’’ Lombardi said in an interview with the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson. “I don’t know why there needs to be a scapegoat, so I’m not sure what I’m being scapegoated for. I thought it was a good season. So, no, I didn’t feel like that in any way. I just think (Payton) just wanted to go in another direction.”
Lombardi also told Tomasson it's "part of the business," and he appreciates that Payton employed him on three occasions (two different stints with the New Orleans Saints followed by a reunion in Denver).
Lombardi, the grandson of Vince Lombardi, is now a coaching free agent. His resume includes stops at five NFL teams with extensive experience as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
