When the Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi on Tuesday, fans and pundits quickly speculated that such a move could clear the way for Davis Webb to be promoted in Denver.
Webb might end up being a candidate to replace Lombardi, but the Denver Post's Parker Gabriel (and others) reported Tuesday that Lombardi was fired independent of Webb's status.
The NFL's Rooney Rule states that the team must interview at least two minority candidates before making an offensive coordinator hire. Consequently, the Broncos are not expected to make a hire quickly, as was noted by the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson.
Webb, meanwhile, is one of the top three candidates for the Las Vegas Raiders' head coach opening, alongside Klint Kubiak and Brian Daboll, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. Las Vegas has not yet made a decision and the team plans to interview another candidate this week, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
So the Raiders might not be close to hiring a head coach. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Broncos wait to hire their new OC until after Las Vegas makes its HC decision, and Webb will be a key name to watch in the coming weeks.
