The NHL Department of Safety has punished Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin for his illegal slash on Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin. They’ve suspended him five games for the incident. The Penguins will miss a key center until March 16th against the Colorado Avalanche.
Malkin earned the suspension for slashing Dahlin in the face in Pittsburgh’s 5-1 loss to the Sabres on March 5. The two nearly got in a scrum after the slash.
This is the longest suspension of Malkin’s career, and it’s the first time he’s been suspended since April 11th, 2022, when he cross-checked an opponent in the face. Malkin will lose $158.854.15 in salary from this suspension.
Malkin, even at 39 years old, is still an important part of Pittsburgh’s offensive gameplan. He has 13 goals and 47 points in 46 games this season. This is despite just 17:29 minutes per game on the ice. He’s just one of two skaters on the Penguins who average more than a point per game this season (Sidney Crosby).

He’s missed time due to injury earlier this season, suffering an upper-body injury in early December that caused him to miss 15 games. Still, it stings to have him for the lineup. The Sabres, meanwhile, are glad that Dahlin wasn’t seriously hurt from this deal.
The Penguins currently sit at 75 points on the season, second in the Metropolitan Division behind the Carolina Hurricanes (84). Meanwhile, the Sabres are at 80 points, tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the lead in the Atlantic Division.
