The AFC West is one of the NFL's more intriguing divisions coming into the 2026 season. The Denver Broncos are looking to prove that last season wasn't a fluke. The Kansas City Chiefs are ready to rebound behind a generational head coach/QB duo. The Los Angeles Chargers have bolstered their roster and look to protect Justin Herbert for once. The Las Vegas Raiders believe a new era is taking shape. Let's look at the AFC West divisions' reasons for optimism heading into 2026.

Denver Broncos - Bo Nix is the generational type of QB they've been longing for

Since the great Peyton Manning has retired, it seems that the Broncos have finally found the long-term answer under center in Bo Nix. Nix took a significant step in 2025, demonstrating poise, accuracy, and command of the offense. The Broncos are becoming a perennial contender in a very tough division. The best thing about it is that Nix isn't doing it alone, with Denver's defense among the league's best. The Broncos' 2026 season will begin with a very high ceiling, and if they continue on this trajectory, they will be challenging for a title year after year.

Kansas City Chiefs - As long as Patrick Mahomes is breathing, the Chiefs are in the running

A lot of times, the biggest reason for optimism is one player, but the Chiefs have been relevant in all aspects for years now, and that doesn't appear to be slowing any time soon, as long as Mahomes and the supporting cast are healthy. Until proven otherwise, you just cannot bet against an Andy Reid-led team. Last year was an uncharacteristic disappointment, and that's what scares me with this team. History would suggest not to write them off. Even with some roster turnover, they should be in the title picture at season's end.

Los Angeles Chargers - Establishing a winning culture and protecting Justin Herbert

Even with the loss of Jim Harbaugh to the New York Giants, the culture has quickly changed for the better. The Chargers will be a more physical football team, and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel will dial up coverages and protections to give Justin Herbert time in the pocket to make plays. Now, with an emphasis on running the football, Herbert will not be relied on so heavily to do everything himself. If they can control the line of scrimmage, a division title could land in the rafters of Sofi Stadium with the Chargers logo on it, not that other team's.

Las Vegas Raiders - Finally, a clear direction?

Let's be honest, the Raiders have absolutely lacked consistency for the better part of a decade or more. The roster always seems to remain a work in progress, but the signing of Kirk Cousins, who I believe still has plenty to give, and the number one pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Fernando Mendoza, lying in wait, is the right path for this franchise. The longer Mendoza waits, the brighter the future will look for the Raiders. A great draft with some really good young prospects, and I know the fan base is impatient, but you can't expect things to be turned around overnight. There is reason to be optimistic for Las Vegas, but it just may be one more season...
