2025 was a season to forget for Oregon Ducks wide receiver Evan Stewart. After a torn patellar tendon in his right knee sidelined him for the entire season, the former Texas A&M transfer isn't taking this offseason lightly.

"I think this is the hardest I've ever seen Stewie work," Oregon offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer said. "I had a bunch of conversations with him about the goals that he has, where he wants to go and what he's capable of doing. I think it's not a secret that he can run, but there are a lot of guys that can run that don't make it in the NFL, right? And ultimately, that's his dream."

The work ethic will put Stewart back near the top of the depth chart in the wide receiver room, a place he took during Oregon's undefeated 2024 season, which led to a Big Ten title.

The 6-foot speedster had 48 catches for 613 yards and five touchdowns for the Ducks that year. He was prepared to be the go-to target for Dante Moore in 2025 and come through on expectations of becoming a first-round pick in the NFL Draft, but a summer injury dashed those dreams quickly.

In his first season as offensive coordinator for the Ducks, Mehringer is taking notice of Stewart's progression while returning from injury, and he has big plans for him this fall.

"What's the difference maker for him?" Mehringer said. "I think it's going to be, you know, that change in his approach, and I think we're seeing that. It's pretty cool to watch."

Even after a full season off the field, Stewart can serve as a role model for the young wideouts in the room with him. Dakorien Moore and Jeremiah McClellan could learn from Stewart's experience in big games against some of the nation's best competition.

There is also something to be said about being a reliable, QB-friendly target for Moore in the passing game. Last season, Malik Benson and Kenyon Sadiq were Moore's security blanket on third downs. This season, Stewart's knowledge of the system, paired with his dynamic abilities, could make him Moore's favorite guy to throw to.

"He's one of the guys today in our unit meeting that I called out specifically and said, ‘Hey, we all know what your goals are, right? We need to see those goals reflected in the way that you work today.’ And I thought he did that," Mehringer said.

So far, it appears Stewart's constant work to get back healthy has him on track for a productive spring leading into the fall, keeping his NFL dreams alive and well. His play on the field and vocal leadership of the rest of the receivers will be something to watch during spring practice.
